Welcome!

Welcome to Reformed Baptist Apologetics. Reformed Baptist theology is based on the beliefs of the historic seventeenth century Particular Baptists.

See also "A History of the English Baptists" by Joseph Ivimey

Their first Confession of Faith was THE FIRST LONDON BAPTIST CONFESSION OF FAITH (1644,1646)

The Appendix to the 1646 First London Baptist Confession of Faith by Benjamin Cox

The First London Baptist Confession of Faith (1646) with Appendix (free downloadable software program that has full text of Scripture references from each article of the Confession). Also, has topical and Scripture indexes.

The fullest expression of their theology, however, was in the 1689 London Baptist Confession of Faith (BCF) . See also

  • Doctrinal Distinctives of the 1689 London Baptist Confession of Faith
  • Free software called the "BCF Assistant" which includes doctrine, history, and theology of the Confession as well as a topical and Scriptural index of the confession can be downloaded here .
  • A History of how the 1644 and 1689 Baptist Confessions of Faith developed is given by Pastor James M. Renihan in "Confessing the Faith in 1644 and 1689".
This theology is also the same as the Founders of the Southern Baptist Convention and Baptists in America who subscribed to the THE 1742 PHILADELPHIA CONFESSION OF FAITH, which was adopted almost verbatim from the BCF. I will be using the BCF and it's Scriptural proofs to demonstrate what makes Reformed Baptist theology, as expressed in the BCF, distinctive from other kinds of non-Reformed Baptist views and from Presbyterian views as expressed in the 1646 Westminster Confession of Faith (original version) (WCF) . The 1689 London Baptist Confession of Faith borrowed heavily from the Westminster Confession of Faith (original version), but still retains its own distinctives. The BCF also borrowed much of its language from the congregationalist Savoy Declaration of 1658 as well. Note : this version of the Savoy Declaration has notes that allow you to compare it to similar sections of the 1646 Westminster Confession of Faith (original version).

The Westminster Confession of Faith Index to Words and Phrases : Index to the Westminster Standards

1647 Westminster Larger Catechism (with full Scripture proofs)

1647 Westminster Shorter Catechism (with full Scripture proofs)

Westminster Shorter Catechism Lessons (from Trinity Orthodox Presbyterian Church in Franklin, Pennsylvania)

See also "Harmony of the Westminster Standards" including the Westminster Confession of Faith, the Westminster Larger Catechism, and the Westminster Shorter Catechism, in three columns, complete with Scripture references.

The Reformed predecessors for the WCF are the Three Forms of Unity
which include the
Belgic Confession (1561)
Heidelberg Catechism (1563)
Canons of Dort (1618/1619)

Many Reformed congregations use the Three Forms of Unity as their confessional standards.

See "Comparison of the Westminster and the Reformed Confessions of Faith" by Herman Hanko for a comparison of the Westminster Confession of Faith (original version) and the Three Forms of Unity

The Second Helvetic Confession of Faith by Heinrich Bullinger was the official confession of faith of the Swiss Reformed Church adopted in 1566. It was also adopted by the Reformed Church in Scotland (1566), Hungary (1567), France (1571), and Poland (1578)
